Evil Genius

★★★★☆ 7.6 / 10

Evil Genius: The True Story of America's Most Diabolical Bank Heist investigates one of the most bizarre crimes in American history: the 2003 death of Brian Wells, a pizza delivery man who robbed a bank with a bomb collar locked around his neck. Wells was killed when the bomb exploded, and the investigation revealed a conspiracy that involved multiple people and a plot that seemed designed to fail.

The series pieces together the complex conspiracy from the perspectives of the investigating FBI agents, the surviving participants, and the victims. The "collared bomber" case is one of those rare crimes that gets stranger the more you learn about it. The series does an excellent job of navigating the confusing web of suspects, motives, and unreliable confessions.

Marjorie Diehl-Armstrong, the mastermind, is a figure of terrifying complexity. Brilliant, manipulative, and mentally unstable, she controlled a network of pawns who were willing to carry out increasingly elaborate schemes. Her interviews from prison are chilling — she seems to enjoy the attention and the game.

The central question is why. Was the bank robbery a real attempt at theft, a murder disguised as a robbery, or something entirely different? The series presents the evidence and allows the viewer to draw their own conclusions. The final episode, which includes interviews with surviving participants, raises more questions than it answers.

Evil Genius is essential for true crime fans who enjoy cases that defy explanation. It's a story about manipulation, mental illness, and a crime that might never be fully understood.
