The Return of Dexter

★★★★☆ 8.1 / 10

Dexter: New Blood is a revival season that gave the beloved serial killer a more satisfying conclusion than the original series finale. Set ten years after the original, the season finds Dexter Morgan living in the small town of Iron Lake, New York, under the assumed name Jim Lindsay. He has given up killing and is trying to live a normal life.

The season brings back Dexter's son Harrison, now a teenager, whose arrival forces Dexter to confront his past and his nature. The father-son dynamic is the season's emotional core. Dexter wants to protect Harrison from becoming like him, while Harrison is drawn to his father's darkness. Jack Alcott gives a strong performance as Harrison, capturing a young man shaped by trauma and searching for identity.

Michael C. Hall slips back into the role with ease, reminding us why he made Dexter iconic. His internal monologue, the ritual of the kill, and the constant calculation of risk and reward are all present. But the character has aged, and the performance has grown more reflective.

The season introduces a new antagonist, Kurt Caldwell (Clancy Brown), a powerful local figure with his own dark secrets. The confrontation between Dexter and Kurt provides the season's thriller momentum. The ending, while controversial, is more thematically consistent than the original finale, completing Dexter's arc in a way that feels inevitable.

Dexter: New Blood is essential for fans of the original series. It offers closure while honoring what made the show great.
